The Core Four of Successful e-Learning

Gone are the days of simply taking your in-person training materials and pasting them online. The truth is, old-school online learning platforms just aren’t meeting the needs of the modern-day learner anymore.

As the world keeps changing, so do people’s needs, and right now e-learning should evolve to suit the demands of our environments. Even though microlearning, mobile learning, adaptive learning, and gamification are each successful in their own right, the true magic lies in the combination of all four.

Let’s decode some of these components!

Microlearning

How often have you clicked on a Youtube video that looks interesting, only to quickly backtrack once you realise the video is 10 minutes or longer? We lead busy lives and don’t always have time to spare!

Enter microlearning. Microlearning is a learning approach focusing on making concepts as concise and targeted as possible. A piece of learning content should be short and sharp, with 2-3 minutes being ideal, and 10 minutes being the absolute maximum, in order to keep your learners engaged and focused.

So in other words, instead of covering a massive topic in one-hour lessons, the topic is instead broken down into bite-sized concepts. This creates a pattern of shorter chunks of content, leading to shorter learning times, and ending with higher retention rates.

Now, your users can fit their learning into the flow of the day, with a few minutes of learning in a grocery store queue or while the dinner cooks.

Mobile learning

Mobile devices are pretty much designed to host every environment we require. It’s the place where you hang out with your friends, do your banking, shop the latest trends, and discuss projects with coworkers, so why not also a place of learning?

Mobile learning allows users to learn anywhere and at any time - enabling them to engage with the content even more than they probably would have before.

Adaptive learning

To put it simply, adaptive learning creates a customised learning path tailored to each user’s specific learning needs. This is done through AI technology tracking the user’s performance, learning style, and interaction with a course.

Not only does this save time, but it also helps the user to focus on the points they might be struggling with instead of spending time on the things they already know.

Gamification

In the world of e-learning, gamification is used to motivate users by using game design elements in a learning environment.

Gamification’s role is to make learning fun! It maximises enjoyment and engagement, encourages healthy competition where necessary, and inspires and motivates users to continue learning.

By incorporating all four of these components into your own online learning offering, you’ll ultimately create a recipe for retention and provide users with a unique, fun, and effective learning experience that's suited to their needs, performance, and daily schedule.
